Acropolis of Lindos
The Acropolis rises over the town and is one of the biggest attractions that the island has to offer. It is a natural citadel and has been influenced by many different cultures and civilizations, such as the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Knights of St John and the Ottomans. Built on a steep rock of 116 meters height, the Acropolis boasts magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding coastline.
Sightseeing on the Acropolis
On the Acropolis there is plenty of sightseeing to do, such as to visit the Castle of the Knights of St. John, the Greek Orthodox Church of St. John, the Doric Temple of Athena Lindia built on 300BC, the Propylea (gateways} and the ancient theatre. Some other spots of archeological interest in Lindos are the Kleovoulos Tomb built as a funerary monument of a rich Lindian family and the Archokrateio, a Hellenistic burial site carved into the rock.
Agios Pavlos Beach
Agios Pavlos or St Paul’s is a gorgeous beach, consisting of two bays in close proximity to each other. The natural landscape, consisting of sand, pebbles and rocks creates a relaxing holiday setting. The beach is equipped with umbrellas and sun beds, which are for hire, also a snack bar and restaurant to feed you after a long swim!
Valley of the Butterflies
This natural sanctuary is located 25 km from the town of Rhodes, near the village of Kalamonas. It is a small valley with rich plantation of pines, planes, fig trees and flowers, where every summer, June to September, thousands of butterflies are attracted, particularly the rare subspecies Panaxia Quadripunctaria Butterfly. The climate and flora conditions are ideal for the butterflies to breed, a phenomenon that attracts several scientist and tourist to the area.
Seven Springs (Epta Piges)
Seven springs is a dreamlike landscape, just 30 kilometers southeast of the town of Rhodes. Rich vegetation, high pine trees and a small brook with running water create a revitalizing atmosphere. The water brook reaches a beautiful lake, which can be visited after passing through a tunnel of about a 15 minute walk.
Kallithea Spa was built by the Italians as a sanctuary, where the waters spurting up from the rocks would offer healing properties. It is a mere 9 km from the town of Rhodes and combines architectural as well as natural beauty. Kallithea Springs has been almost entirely restored so that the great rotunda with the love statue at its center is now used for cultural events, exhibitions and weddings. There is also a beautiful cove-like bay where you can sunbathe or dive into the crystal-clear waters whilst getting refreshments from the café.
